Instructional Strategies

INTASC standard 8: Instructional Strategies

The artifact I chose is a geometry unit lesson plan created for the introduction to geometry for elementary teachers course at the College of Menominee Nation. The course requirement was to create three geometry lesson plans using Danielson's framework. The lesson plans focus on area, perimeter and volume of a square, triangle and rectangle.

INTASC Teacher Standard Alignment

This artifact addresses INTASC standard 8: Instructional Strategies- "The teacher understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies to encourage learners to develop deep understanding of content areas and their connections, and to build skills to apply knowledge in meaningful ways."

This artifact aligns with this standard because I used many different instructional strategies when creating this unit lesson plan. I aimed to address all styles of learning by including a book with each geometry lesson. I hoped to simplify complex mathematical concepts to allow learners to deeper understanding of content areas. This unit lesson plan gives students a hands on opportunity to manipulate and measure 2-D and 3-D objects.

What I gained most from this experience is the opportunity to connect one of my strengths to one of my weaknesses. Through this experience I have also gained constructive feedback ofhow to better make connections between reading and mathematics. What I have learned through this experience will impact my community by gaining strategies to utilize and share with my colleagues. It will also better prepare me to teach core classes in our present immersion room and future dual language classroom settings.
