INTASC Standard 9: Professional Learning and Ethical Practice

The artifact I chose is a second year Menominee Language, Culture and History One Year Annual Teacher License. It is issued for the period of June 30, 2019 to June 30, 2020. I am granted all the rights and privileges under the sovereign jurisdiction of the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin to teach the Menominee Language, Culture and History. For the second year teaching certificate teachers are expected to pass a grammar section, a history and culture section, and a verbal test.

INTASC Teacher Standard Alignment

This artifact addresses INTASC standard 9: Professional Learning and Ethical Practice- “The teacher engages in ongoing professional learning and uses evidence to continually evaluate his/her practice, particularly the effects of his/her choices and actions on others (learners, families, other professionals, and the community), and adapts practice to meet the needs of each learner.”

This artifact aligns with this standard because it demonstrates ongoing professional learning and is annually evaluated to meet the needs of Menominee language learners. Meeting the requirements to earn a second year Menominee Language, Culture and History One Year Annual Teacher License is evidence that I continually evaluate my practice.

I learned that it takes hard work and dedication to earn a second year Menominee Language, Culture and History One Year Annual Teaching License. To receive a one-year certificate, one must receive a score of 65% or better to pass the grammar test and must receive a score of 90% or better to pass the verbal test. The grammar test consists of a Menominee history test and a grammar test. The verbal test consists of Menominee conversation and a cultural presentation.

With less room for error than the first year teaching certificate I learned that a detailed lesson plan is extremely useful when presenting difficult material to the Menominee Language and Culture Commission. I also learned the linguistics behind Menominee language, this will help me better understand the use of words in a structured and conventional way. Two other things that will be useful when meeting learner needs is the ability to effectively incorporate history in my lesson plan, and hold a conversation with a panel of three commissioners. What I have learned through this experience will impact my community by assisting in creating first language speakers. Ultimately I will be an active part in the revitalization of Menominee language.
